President Donald Trump and his administration are preparing to launch an illegal war against Iran, threatening to cause regional chaos, raise prices at home, and put American lives at risk while dragging the United States into yet another unprovoked war in the Middle East. Over the weekend, the President issued a “10 to 15 day” ultimatum to Iran and deployed the largest U.S. military build-up in the Middle East since the illegal 2003 invasion of Iraq. More than 120 aircraft, including F-22s and F-35s, two carrier strike groups, and advanced surveillance systems are now positioned within striking distance of Iran.
President Trump is making this threat although Congress has not authorized military force against the country, and Iranian and American negotiators are in Geneva, Switzerland, negotiating a deal to limit Iran’s nuclear production. The Constitution grants Congress, and Congress alone, the authority to declare war on another country. Any unilateral strike ordered by the President would be illegal and unconstitutional.
The President is not only preparing to break the law by attacking Iran, but he’s violating the will of the people. Americans do not want this war. National polling shows that the vast majority of voters oppose U.S. military action against Iran, and 70 percent say the President should seek Congressional approval before military action against another country.
Congress must act immediately to prevent another catastrophic war. Members of the House and Senate are preparing War Powers resolutions that would prohibit unauthorized military action against Iran and reassert Congress’s constitutional authority.
