What the Midterm Elections Mean for Us

While the counting of votes in this election is ongoing, the “red wave” predicted by pollsters didn’t materialize, & the fight between Republicans & Democrats for control of Congress remains competitive. Here are some key takeaways that deserve your attention:

1. Summer Lee, who expressed support for Palestinian human rights & is the FIRST Black woman to join Congress from Pennsylvania, won her House seat, overcoming the $ MILLIONS the Israel lobby spent against her, proving you can stand up to AIPAC’s smears and bullying and still win.

2. Palestinian-Americans Abdelnasser Rashid and Ruwa Romman have won their elections for State Representative in Illinois and Georgia respectively. We’re so elated to see more and more Palestinian Americans take up space and play a leadership role in our democracy. Congrats!

3. Palestinian American Rashida Tlaib won her re-election handily, along with many supporters of Palestinian human rights in Congress, like Ilhan Omar, AOC, Andre Carson, Betty McCollum, Cori Bush, Mark Pocan, and others. Support for Palestinian rights in Congress is here to stay and is evergrowing.

THESE successes are an ode to the importance of exercising our right to vote and making sure we’re bringing proper representation into these policymaking spaces. We will keep you posted as more election updates that impact Palestinian Americans or the effort to shift Washington’s policy on the Palestinian struggle for freedom roll in.
